(Posting Report) “Investing in Health: The Key to Economic Development in Africa”
date : 2/20/2014
The following report is based on the May 31, 2013 symposium, “Investing in Health: The Key to Economic Development in Africa.” In recent years, the field of global health has seen an increase in partnerships between the public and private sector including international NGOs, financial groups, and corporate enterprises. These public-private partnerships (PPPs) serve as an innovative approach to addressing health issues that persist around the globe.
In this report, we focus on two such PPPs: 1) Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), a Swiss foundation that has partnered with DSM Nutrition Japan to address hunger in Kenya by developing and promoting nutritionally fortified dairy products; 2) International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) that in partnership with DNAVEC Corporation aims to accelerate the development of a HIV vaccine. Using these PPPs as examples, we discuss the significance of these partnerships and offer our suggestions as this model continues to develop.
